Mandriva, Progeny, and Turbolinux Team Up for New Distribution
Bookmark on del.icio.us or FurlMandriva, Progeny, and Turbolinux will be teaming up to create a new distribution based on the Debian Linux distribution. This new distribution will then be the base for the next enterprise server distributions from all three companies.
According to this article on eWeek, there has been no official announcement, but sources close to all three companies have confirmed the reports.
The as of yet to be named distribution will be based on Debian “Sarge” Linux version 3.1.
While Debian has always been viewed as one of the most stable and controlled distributions, I’m not sure that even this will help Mandriva, Progeny, and Turbolinux to compete with Red Hat and Novell in the enterprise server market. The biggest concerns of customers in this market is service and support and both Novell and Red Hat are way ahead of the rest in these areas — at least that is the perception in the corporate circle.
