Linux Trademark Letter Gets Positive Results

The Linux Trademark Letter that was sent out last month (you can read more about that letter here) on behalf of the Linux Mark Institute (LMI) is apparently receiving a positive response.

According to this article on ZDNet Australia, responses have been received from more than 10% of the organizations that were notified of their possible infringement of the Linux Trademark. Jeremy Malcom, the lawyer who sent the letter, says that this response exceeded their expectations.

When the letter was originally sent out, many people expressed concerns that Linus Torvalds was trying to profit from Linux through the LMI. But it turns out that in many cases the letter was sent to determine if the organizations were actually using Linux for commercial gain.

I’m sure that more of these letters will be sent out, not just in Australia but in other countries, and hopefully people will now realize that this is all being done for exactly the reason stated — to protect the Linux Trademark - not profit.
