Linux on the Nintendo Gamecube - Why?
Bookmark on del.icio.us or FurlWhile I would never discourage anyone from trying to get Linux to run on something, I sometimes wonder why they would want to in the first place. I guess this is another one of those situations. Apparently, Linux has now been modified and compiled to run on the Nintendo Gamecube. The Gamecube Linux project has a port of the Linux kernel and associated GNU utilities that will give you a functioning GNU / Linux system on the Nintendo game console.
Like I said before, I’m not sure why you would want to run Linux on your Gamecube, although they do give some reasons on the project website:
* to use a GameCube as a thin client
* to use a GameCube as a multimedia terminal
* to use a GameCube as a tiny PowerPC-based server
* as a runtime environment for homebrew development
For those of you who have a Gamecube and want to use it as a web server for all your mission critical websites, there are full instructions at the Gamecube Linux Project Website along with a step by step how-to. And if anyone does get their Gamecube on the internet with this, leave the link here — I’d love to see it in action!
