Linux Kernel 2.6.14 Released
Bookmark on del.icio.us or FurlLinus Torvalds has announced the release of the Linux 2.6.14 Kernel on the Linux Kernel Mailing List. As reported back in September, there are changes all over the place, including additional and updated filesystems and wireless enhancements.
Probably the most notable change is in the wireless area. Intel Centrino Wireless Chipset Support is now included in the Linux Kernel. While this was available before with the ipw2xx drivers, it’s now part of the standard kernel and doesn’t require extra drivers to be built and loaded.
Another important change is the inclusion of the FUSE filesystem in the standard kernel. FUSE (filesystem in userspace) provides a simple API that makes it possible to implement a fully functional filesystem in a userspace program very easily and securely. While end users will not see an immediate benifit from this addition, it will be interesting to see what developers will do with this over time.
There is a comprehensive changelog available at kernelnewbies.org and the full changelog is available at kernel.org.
