Linux Coming Soon To The New Intel Based Macs
Bookmark on del.icio.us or FurlIn the tradition of having Linux run on any piece of computer hardware known to man, Computerworld is reporting that a number of popular Linux distributions are working to make their versions of Linux run on the new Apple Macintosh Computers that use Intel processors.
Some of the current Linux distributions, like Mandriva, already support the new Intel Core Duo processors that are the brains of the new Macs. But, due to a new technology used in these Macs called Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI), current Linux distributions are unable to boot and startup a new Mac. EFI is the successor to the BIOS technology that has been used on most home computers for over two decades to give the operating system access to the hardware.
I’m sure we will see Linux running on these new Macs very soon. There is already a boot loader that will run Linux on certain Intel 64 Bit Processor Based Servers that, in theory, could be easily modified to boot Linux on the new “Mactels”.
