Linus Torvalds Cracks Down on Kernel Developers

Bookmark on del.icio.us or Furl

With Linux Kernel 2.6.14 released almost a month late and the pressure to release future Kernels sooner, Linus Torvalds has stated that he is going to get tough on Kernel Coders. Quote from Torvalds:

If people miss the merge window or start abusing it with hurried last minute things that just cause problems for RC1, I’ll just refuse to merge, and laugh in their faces derisively when they whine plaintively at me, and tell them there’s going to be a new opening soon enough.

Of course, not all the Kernel Contributors were happy when they heard this. They also have to deal with people making last minute patches and changes to the code that they maintain for the Linux Kernel. Torvalds response to them was simple — deal with them like I am dealing with you and don’t accept last minute and late changes.

We all know this is easier said than done. While I’m sure all the Kernel Coders and Maintainers would love to get everything in during a merge period on time (or even early) I’m also sure they don’t want to sacrifice quality in the process. This is a fine line that Torvalds is walking — if he pushes too hard, the quality of the Linux Kernel may suffer.
