Linspire Announces Community Driven Freespire Linux Distribution
Bookmark on del.icio.us or FurlAs if there aren’t enough already, Linspire has announced that they are releasing a free, open source and community driven version of their Linspire Linux Distribution. Following in the footsteps of Fedora and openSUSE, this will be another bleeding edge distribution for testing. It is Debian based like their Linspire Distribution and will come in two different versions: one that is completely open source and a second version that will include all of the closed source and propietary software that is included with Linspire.
While I have tried Linspire in the past and found that it was a very polished Linux distribution that was extremely easy to use (especially for Windows users switching to Linux), I don’t know that another community driven testing distribution can survive and thrive — at least not without something that makes it unique and different. Freespire will have the advantage of the Linspire Click and Run (CNR) GUI software and download system, but I don’t think this will be enough. There are alternatives to CNR like klik that are free (CNR cost $20 a year) and I think that Ubuntu is at least as easy to use — both for existing Linux users and those switching from Microsoft Windows.

Linspire took $40 of my money, I downloaded their “software”, burned a CD, only to find the
software wouldn’t install, and the promised”support” was non-existent.
The sooner Linspire goes belly-up, the better. There are enough scam artists in the world.
