Another Find in the Search for the Perfect Linux Distribution

I’m always on the lookout for the perfect Linux distribution and after seeing this review of a new distribution called PCLinuxOS. The review talks about how simple and quick the install is and that everything just works - which is definitely one of my main requirements for a new Linux distribution.

PCLinuxOS is apparently a fork of Mandriva Linux and it uses the Synaptic/APT Package Management System and installs most of the common desktop software that users will need as part of it’s initial system install.

I think using APT instead of RPM for the package management system is definitely a plus. I’ve found that I tend to like APT better — again, it just seems to work. I also like that after the initial install, most of the basic software I need is already installed. I don’t want to have to spend time installing things such as a web browser and email client — everybody needs them and they should be installed by default. Give me a choice of which ones to install if you want, but install them as part of the main install of the distribution.

PCLinuxOS definitely sounds interesting and I will be installing it later today and letting you know what I think. It will be interesting to see how it compares to Ubuntu, my current favorite.

For those of you who want to try it out yourself, head on over to the PCLinuxOS Download page, where there are links to download the ISO image. The ISO image can be burned to CD and run entirely from the CD so you can try PCLinuxOS without having to install it — a nice feature.
