Systemax today unveiled its first desktop PC that comes preloaded with the Linux Operating System. The Systemax Venture L335 Desktop PC with the Linspire distribution of the Linux OS. It is available in the US for $299 including a 2.8 Ghz Intel Celeron D CPU, 40 GB Hard Drive, and 256MB Memory.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to see Linux pre-installed on desktop computers targeted at the average consumer, but how come it seems like it’s always on bottom of the line, bare bones hardware. Unfortunately, people end up buying these computers, comparing them to their neighbors Windows XP based computer that has much more powerful hardware (and cost alot more money), and decide that this “Linux” thing is no good — it’s too slow.
Even though it’s the fault of the hardware and not the OS, I’m afraid that low end desktop computers like these will end up giving Linux a bad name.
